Round 2 of the AFL saw some key match-ups, and an investigation is underway after racial abuse was aimed at Western Bulldog’s player, in this Monday’s sports round up.
Round 2 AFL highlights
Round 2 commenced Thursday night with Carlton and Geelong battling it out at the MCG as the highly anticipated match saw the Blues produce an eight-point win against the reigning premiers.
Led by Charlie Curnow who kicked five goals for the game, Carlton came alive in the third quarter kicking six goals to take the lead by 28 points.
Jeremy Cameron booted three goals early in the final change to keep Geelong within eight points.
However, the Blues big men proved too strong as they were able to stop promising opportunities from the Cats hanging onto their thrilling victory.
There were extraordinary scenes at the Gabba on Friday night, during Brisbane’s 11-point victory over Melbourne. The game was suspended for over half an hour after the lights went off in the final quarter.
The power outage caused confusion amongst the stadium but fans were amused by the bizarre circumstance flashing their torches from their iPhones.
The Lions were up by 40 points when both teams were asked to leave the ground with 12 minutes left in the game. When the game resumed, the Demons kicked five unanswered goals but Brisbane were able to hold onto their lead.
St Kilda secured their second win after smashing the Bulldogs in a 51-point win on Saturday night. The Saints booted the first five goals of the game and didn’t look back from there.
The Dogs struggled only scoring a point in the first quarter and were unable to keep up with the Saints explosiveness.
AFL to investigate racial abuse against Bulldog’s Jamarra Ugle-Hagan
Western Bulldogs star forward Jamarra Ugle-Hagan has allegedly been a target of racial abuse from Saints fans at Saturday night’s game.
The AFL has opened an investigation and both clubs are working with the AFL to identify the people involved.
“Racism of any kind does not belong in our game, nor in our society. We cannot tolerate it. Comments like these are extremely upsetting and cause significant hurt and harm for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people,” the Bulldogs said in a statement.
The St Kilda Football Club said they are united with the Bulldogs to stamp out racism.
“To be repeatedly addressing these repugnant instances of racism is a blight on our game and society,” the Saints said in a statement.
“We will continue to stamp out and call out this unacceptable behaviour by having these important conversations, as well as make ongoing education available for the wider community.”
Antonio Conte has left Tottenham Hotspur football club after 16 months in charge the club announced on Sunday.
This comes after his outburst at owner Daniel Levy and the club’s trophy record. Conte is also said to be unpopular with the senior players recently making questionable comments and remarks about the squad.
Assistant coach, Cristian Stellini, will now be the club’s acting head coach for the remainder of the season.
