Jacinta Allan begins first full day in office

She was sworn in yesterday.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan says she was “taken aback” when she learned of former premier Daniel Andrews’ resignation.

In an interview with ABC Radio Melbourne, Allan recalled the phone call where Andrews gave her the “heads up”.

“I have played this back a few times. He said it’s time, it’s today, I’m going,” she said.

“He is a tremendous friend and has been a tremendous colleague and I think we all should just wish him and [his wife] Cath and the family all the very best.”

The resignation was finalised yesterday, a day after Andrews’ announcement.

It was followed by a two-hour caucus meeting where the Minister for Public Transport, Ben Carroll, briefly challenged Allan for the position.

After much negotiation, he walked out of the meeting as the new second-in-command.

“To be her deputy premier is a real honour. I couldn’t think of a better job in the world than to support Jacinta,” he saidpost-caucus.

Allan affirmed at a press conference today that she will honour commitments made to Victoria under Andrews and will seek community engagement for future policies.

“We intend to deliver the commitments that the Labor team has made to Victoria … as we swear in a new cabinet and continue to work and consult with colleagues and the Victorian community, there will be the opportunity to further build on that program,” she said.

She has confirmed that she will have a new cabinet in place by Tuesday.
