The suspect of the second alleged assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump faced federal court on Monday and was charged with two gun-related crimes. It is the second apparent assassination attempt on Trump in the last two months.
Suspect Ryan Wesley Routh camped out at Trump’s golf course near West Palm Beach for about 12 hours. Authorities said that Routh’s phone was detected near the tree line from 1.59am until 1.31pm on Sunday.
Around that time a Secret Service agent shot at him after seeing his rifle through the foliage, before the 58-year-old fled the area in an SUV. He was eventually arrested by local law enforcement officers in a neighbouring county.
US Secret Service acting director Ronald Rowe Jr said that they were able to apprehend the suspect in a safe manner.
“He did not fire or get off any shots at our agent,” he said.
“With reports of gunfire, the former president’s close protection detail immediately evacuated the president to a safe location.”
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said the state will launch an investigation into the incident.
“The people deserve the truth about the would-be assassin and how he was able to get within 500 yards of the former president and current GOP nominee,” he said.
In the wake of the attempted assassination, Trump has accused both President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris of incitement.
“Their rhetoric is causing me to be shot at, when I am the one who is going to save the country and they are the ones that are destroying the country – both from the inside and out,” he said.
“These are people that want to destroy our country. It is called the enemy from within. They are the real threat.”
