MWF 2014 Second Look: Destroy the Alpha Gammas

A cross between Glee and Mean Girls, Leah McKendrick's comedy series Destroy the Alpha Gammas (DAG) is an exploration of rivalry and revenge set in the world of sororities.

Ahead of Melbourne WebFest 2014 we are profiling all the series in the Official Selection as well as the “Second Look” series.

Inspiration for the series came after writer and star of the show, Leah Mckendrick, failed to make it into the TV series, Glee. Missing the musicals of her childhood and teen years, Leah wanted to get friends together and do a fun, crazy show.

From IAWTV Award-winning director, Scott Brown (Larry King NowBlue Movies) and executive producer, Shin Shimosawa (The FollowingThe GrudgeDAG is a sexy and edgy comedy driven by top 40 hits, love triangles, and cat fights in the vein of Bridesmaids or Pitch Perfect.

The series showcases stellar cast of triple threat performers including Jon Robert Hall (Glee), Lindsey Morgan (Daytime Emmy Nominee General Hospital) and Sara Fletcher (Comedy Central’s My Secret Girlfriend).

Why should people watch your series?

People tell me it’s addictive.  You want to hate it, you think you might hate it, but you will probably like it an embarrassing amount.

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome in production?

We filmed on location at UCLA, USC and Chapman university in Los Angleles. We shot at a real sorority house at UCLA and it was filled with real sorority girls who were not always happy we were there. We were always fighting against the clock. 10 musical numbers, seven episodes, tons of actors and locations with six days of shooting, it was challenging.

How do you reach your audience?

Social media is obviously great; we used hash tagging to reach out to fans of Glee and Mean Girls and musicals. We did lots of press releases. The festival circuit and web community helped a lot.  We started to build a little reputation.  Once you get the ball rolling it’s easier.

Why make a web series?

They are the future.  It is the only way to potentially reach the entire world without a studio behind you.
