AFL: GWS Giants players handed sanctions after end-of-year party

Reports of inappropriate skits and costumes at a private event have led to GWS Giants players being investigated by the AFL.

The AFL has handed out suspensions and fines after alleged “inappropriate” behaviour involving GWS Giants players at a “Wacky Wednesday” celebration.

GWS Giants players are now in hot water after the AFL integrity unit was called in to investigate their end-of-year event. The Age reported that the party involved several players dressing in inappropriate costumes and performing distasteful jokes and skits.

Nine News journalist Tom Morris on SEN Breakfast revealed details about the party and the skits performed.

“A couple of players did a skit from a movie. One player, who is set to be fined quite significantly, dressed up as [Aussie Olympic breakdancer] Raygun,” he said.

“One young player in particular, who is said to have made an ill-informed joke about [American rapper] P-Diddy, is set for the harshest suspension.”

Seven News AFL reporter Mitch Cleary gave information about who was involved and the penalties that the players will be facing.

“It was a players-only event, no victims were centred from the public,” he said.

“A number of players have been given suspensions, the AFL giving those players a chance to respond as part of negotiations. Other players will be hit with financial penalties.”

The GWS Giants have come out with a statement regarding the investigation.

“The Giants are aware of an anonymous allegation of inappropriate behaviour at the players’ end-of-season event last month,” it said.

“The club and its integrity unit have been working with the AFL’s integrity unit to investigate. The club will make no further comment until the outcomes of the investigation have been finalised.”
