AFL to trial smart-ball technology

The microchipped ball will be trialled in this weekend's VFL and VFLW games.

The AFL will trial smart-ball technology at this weekend’s VFL opening round.

A microchipped ball will be used at Saturday’s VFL clash between Sandringham and Collingwood followed by VFLW game between St Kilda and Collingwood. The specially designed balls by Sherrin have been used by clubs over the summer, with the ball now progressing to the next stage of the trial which investigates how the ball performs in a match setting.

Laura Kane, the AFL’s GM of Football says the new technology will open up a range of possibilities in the game.

“Our work on the smart-ball and its tracking technology is progressing well and we are excited about the possibilities of what this can do, both from a performance data perspective but also for providing insights for fans in-match and at home, as well as the options it could potentially unlock for our broadcasters.”

The technology involves inserting sensors into the ball that help determine its exact location on the field. These sensors will also track the speed and length of a kick and handball during a match.
