Another loved restaurant falls victim to Melbourne’s crumbling hospitality scene

The Olive Jar is one of nine Melbourne hospitality venues who have recently called it quits.

After 40 years, The Olive Jar has closed its doors as owners said it was time to embark on a new journey.

The beloved Italian restaurant was located on Rathdowne Street in Carlton and the owners shared the news of its closure on social media last week.

“To our cherished patrons, it is with a mixture of emotions that we share this news: after over 40 years, The Olive Jar family has decided to bid farewell and embark on a new journey,” the post said.

The restaurant was famous for not only its food but its waiters who would serenade patrons table side.

“We hold dear the countless memories we have shared with you and extend our heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering support throughout the years,” the post said.

“As we step back for a well-deserved break, we look forward to the possibility of serving you once again in the future.”

There have been around nine different hospitality venues that have recently closed down in Melbourne, including the original La Porchetta also located on Rathdowne street which closed in February.

The Olive Jar is the most recent casualty as Melbourne’s hospitality scene continues its struggle.
