Australia have secured a spot in the semi-finals of the women’s T20 World Cup, while India have a nervous wait to see if they advance out of the group stage.
Australia won the toss and decided to bat first. Opener Grace Harris started off strongly for Australia, scoring 40 off 41 balls. Stand-in captain Tahlia McGrath also impressed with the bat making a solid 32 off 26 deliveries. Ellyse Perry also made 32 off 23 balls, coming in at the end of the 11th over and steered her team to a good score of 8-151 off their twenty overs.
The Indians in response started off well putting on an opening partnership of 26 before losing their first wicket halfway through the third over. Their captain Harmanpreet Kaur came in at number four and looked dominate from the very first ball she face. Kaur scored an impressive 54 not out off 47 balls.
Despite Kaur’s best efforts she could not get her team over the line. India needed 14 runs off the last over to win but only managed to score four runs as they lost four wickets in four balls, which included two run-outs. India finished their innings 9-142 off twenty overs.
Australian captain Alyssa Healy missed the game due to an “acute right foot injury”. It is uncertain if Healy will be available for the semi-final with the team saying she “will continue to be assessed and her availability determined in due course”.
The win continued Australia’s streak of making every women’s T20 World Cup semi-finals. They have won 15-straight games in the T20 format. India will wait for the result of the Pakistan vs New Zealand game to see if they progress further in the tournament.
