Australian prime minister announces China visit

China has agreed to review its tariffs on Australian wine.

Anthony Albanese has accepted President Xi Jinping’s invitation hours before flying out to meet with Joe Biden in the US.

During the Prime Minister’s stay in Washington, he aims to push the talk of nuclear-powered submarines with the US Congress and express its need for more nuclear technology to counter China.

“With Australia’s closest partner, talking about the future of our alliance, the future which has been upgraded by the AUKUS arrangements, a future based upon our common values, our commitment to democracy and our commitment to the international rule of law and stable order throughout the globe,” he said.

Albanese plans to then attend the China International Import Expo between November 4-7 this year.

Albanese will be the first Australian Prime Minster to travel to Beijing and Shanghai in seven years.

In a media release, Albanese said his attendance at the expo is an important step towards ensuring a stable and productive relationship with China.

Albanese’s visit to China is an opportunity for Australia to trade in the Chinese wine market, worth more than 1 billion Australian dollars to exporters.

“We’re very confident that this will result in once again Australian wine, a great product, being able to go to China free of the tariffs which have been imposed by China,” he said.

Albanese will travel to Washington to meet with Biden this week. He will then travel to China in early November before returning to the US from November 15-17 for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leader’s forum in San Francisco.
