Police have confirmed four people have died in a crash on the Hume Freeway.
The collision between a car and a truck happened yesterday around 10:30am in Chiltern, 30km outside of Wodonga. The four people in the car died at the scene and the driver of the truck sustained non life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital.
Wodonga Acting Sergeant Joel Hughes said the unfortunate result of the accident is a reflection of road safety.
“It’s terrible — unfortunately in regional Victoria this year we’ve seen a number of lives lost on our roads and this is another tragic incident,” he said.
The car was attempting to turn left at the Wenkes Road intersection onto the freeway as the truck was heading north when the two vehicles collided.
Victoria has recorded 197 deaths on its roads so far this year, 40 more than this time last year.
The Victoria Police has put out an urgent road safety warning as the state enters a high risk period for road accidents. This is to avoid a repeat of last year’s 28 fatalities in the month of September — the highest number recorded for the month in 16 years.
