Guest lecture – Barrie Cassidy, host of ABC1’s Insiders and Offsiders

Interviewing politicians is a fundamental role of the journalist. But how do reporters cut through the spin? One of Australia's leading political interviewers, Barrie Cassidy, will offer his suggestions today in a guest lecture at La Trobe University.

Today,  ABC television presenter, Barrie Cassidy, will be speaking to first-year students as part of the subject The Interview run by La Trobe University’s Journalism program.

Barrie is one of Australia’s most experienced political journalists.  A reporter for more than 40 years, Barrie currently hosts the ABC‘s political review program, Insidersand the sports discussion program, Offsiders, on Sunday mornings.

Barrie has covered politics in Australia and overseas for more than 20 years and is regarded as one of Australia’s foremost political analysts.  In his career at the ABC, he has held positions including chief political correspondent, 7.30 Report political editor and Europe Correspondent.

He is also a past president of the parliamentary press gallery in Canberra, was press secretary to former Prime Minister Bob Hawke and worked as Washington correspondent for The Australian newspaper during the Clinton era.

In 2010 Barrie released his first political book, The Party Thieves, which charts the downfall of Malcolm Turnbull and Kevin Rudd and an extraordinary federal election year.

Barrie’s guest lecture will be held at 4pm (Wednesday, August 31) in the Martin Lecture Theatre at La Trobe University.
