Supplies have been cut by Israel to the Gaza Strip, as the conflict between Israel and the Hamas militant group escalates.
Until now, Israel imposed strict land, sea and air blockades on Gaza, but used to allow trade and humanitarian assistance through the region. This has stopped, along with the halting of water, power, fuel and food supplies. United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres pleaded on social media for Israel to allow the UN to provide support in Gaza.
“Crucial life-saving supplies – including fuel, food and water – must be allowed into Gaza,” he wrote on X.
“We need rapid and unimpeded humanitarian access now.”
Hospitals have been some of the worst affected by the conflict, with Gaza’s Health Ministry Director General Dr Medhat Abbas saying they are relying on emergency generators to run the hospital’s power and are running out of medicine with the stoppage of supplies.
“With [the] shortage of medication, we are consuming today… what in the ordinary days we consume in one month,” he said.
