The Lord Mayor of Melbourne Sally Capp is stepping down after six years in the role.
Capp announced her departure with “mixed emotions”, saying it has been an honour and privilege to represent the people of Melbourne.
“I have given everything to this role,” she said.
“I have decided that at 56, having spent my 50s so far at Town Hall, it’s time for me to seek new opportunities to propel me into my next decade.”
Although she has intentions of finishing as Lord Mayor at the end of June, Capp says that her work is not quite done yet.
“There is still plenty to do before I leave, including delivering the final Annual Plan and Budget of this Council term.”
“As you know, I like to work at full pace, full-time – and I believe that anyone contesting the election must be all-in for a full term.”
During her time as Lord Mayor, Capp achieved the renewal of the Queen Victoria Market precinct, a new Kensington Community Aquatic and Recreation Center, and the Power Melbourne battery scheme.
The next local government election will take place in October.
