MWF 2014 Official Selection: Doobie Nights

Doobie Nights, created by Jim Vlahopoulos and Sam Warren, is a comedy series about two friends' experiences when introduced to weed.

Ahead of Melbourne WebFest 2014 we are profiling all the series in the Official Selection as well as the “Second Look” series.

The series follows housemates Jim and Jam, who were usually happy sipping on a beer or two after their daily grinds. Now, their friend Anthony has rolled up and placed a fat joint in Jims hand and a large stash of weed in their apartment, making ‘doobie nights’ the new way to unwind.

Each episode is a new adventure as they discover the awesome and sometimes troubling aspects of this new pass time.

Vlahopoulos and Warren, who both have a background in filmmaking, say that they were inspired by the possibilities of giving the ‘weed experience’ a cartoonish look. They wanted to put a more positive message about marijuana out there; a drug that they feel has been a little misunderstood.

Why make a web series?

Web-based entertainment seems to be the future; it doesn’t look like it will be long until TV as we’ve known it for the last 60 years will undergo a massive change. But that aside, there’s an opportunity at the moment to create something and very easily share it for people to see. The internet is a powerful thing, so why not make a web series!

Why should people watch your series?

Watch for the good times, watch for the little philosophies scattered throughout, and watch for the crazy misadventures!

How do you finance your series?

Everything so far has been self-financed by Jim Vlahopoulos.

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome in production?

As the crew have awesomely been donating there time and talents pro bono, it came with the problem that organising everyone together and keeping the production on track, took longer than if we were all working this as a job and not as a second to paid work.

How do you reach your audience?

We try our best to stay up on all the social Medias; we also have a YouTube channel and a website.

Is it an ongoing project? If so, can you give us some clues about what comes next?

We haven’t finished yet; let’s say there’s a lot more in store for Jim and Jam.

Trivia: please tell us a quirky and/or interesting fact about yourself or team that’s unrelated to your web series.

The creators of this web series were once led into the Amazon jungle by a crazed Alcoholic tour guide. It’s still up for debate as to whether they came back out again.
