Ahead of Melbourne WebFest 2014 we are profiling all the series in the Official Selection as well as the “Second Look” series.
Low Life is a black comedy about depression, filmed in Los Angeles. On the surface Jef is a regular guy; he’s good looking, charming, and funny. He has a good job and a beautiful girlfriend. But he just doesn’t feel right, he feels like a lowlife.
What inspired your series?
Inspiration for the series came from creator / director, Luke Eve’s own battles with depression.
Why should people watch your series?
Low Life is unique. It takes a light-hearted look at a serious subject. It also has extremely high production values. The approach to the series was that we were making an episodic collection of miniature feature films.
What do you want people to take away from your series?
We want people to be entertained. We want to draw the audience in and make them think about the world in which they live. And if possible, we also want people to think about mental illness differently by raising an awareness of it.
How do you finance your series?
We raised $13,000 through Kickstarter. The remaining $7,000 was funded by creator, Luke Eve’s, production company, More Sauce.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome in production?
It was More Sauce’s first production in Los Angeles. So that posed new challenges as well as making it very exciting. We could say the usual things like budget and schedule etc but that’s just part of filmmaking these days. That’s what makes it fun
How do you reach your audience?
We have a social media coordinator helping us as well as some awesome PR personnel lending us a hand. We’ve been pretty active on social media as well as building a great website and a general awareness
Is it an ongoing project? If so, can you give us some clues about what comes next?
There’s talk of a second series. Jef, our lead character, tries to break the spiral. But can he?
Why make a web series?
It’s a unique form of storytelling. There are no rules or boundaries. It allows filmmakers to dabble in episodic storytelling without the restrictions of television. Simply, it’s another format available to us as filmmakers. We thought the structure of Low Life was perfect for a web series as opposed to a film or tv show.
Is there anything in particular you’d like us to add about you or your series?
We have a really great soundtrack featuring WEEN, Mental As Anything, Lenka, Darren Hanlon etc. It gives Low Life a very indy feel.
