Cybercrime detectives are investigating a potential data breach affecting more than 1 million customers of NSW clubs and pubs.
Police believe that at least 16 venues were affected by the leak. ClubsNSW which represents over 1,200 member clubs said that they were “deeply concerned” about the leak and that they would act to support the affected venues and customers.
“The clubs concerned are working towards notifying all impacted patrons,” ClubsNSW spokesperson said.
NSW Premier Chris Minns, Deputy Premier Prue Car and Police Minister Yasmin Catley are among those who may have their personal details published.
Outabox, the third party IT provider used by the clubs said in a statement that they are working with police to investigate the leak.
“We are restricted by how much information we are able to provide at this stage given it is currently under active police investigation,” it said.
The IT software is used as a digital sign-in service for its patrons. It is a legal requirement in NSW that licensed clubs collect customers’ personal information on entry.
Data at risk of being published includes facial recognition, licences, signatures and personal information like phone numbers and addresses.
While police continue to investigate the breach, ClubsNSW told members to watch out for scams and to avoid clicking on unknown emails or links.
