Australia has moved up to third in the medal tally at the Paris Olympics, as Arisa Trew won gold in women’s skateboarding, while the Boomers’ campaign came to a disappointing end.
Australia gets their first ever gold medal in women’s skateboarding.
14-year-old Arisa Trew made history as she became the first Australian to earn a medal in women’s skateboarding.
Trew tumbled in her first run, giving her a score of 35.53, and improved in her second run that put her in third place with 90.11. But a daring final run put her in the gold medal position with 93.18, ahead of Japan’s Cocona Hiraki (92.63) and Great Britain’s Sky Brown (92.31).
“My coach said, ‘You’ve just got to go all out,’ and I said “Yep, who cares?” Trew said.
“It’s just super cool that I have won the gold medal because it has been like a dream.”
The Boomers go down to Serbia in overtime.
The Australian men’s basketball team lost to Serbia in the quarter final after a last-minute shot put them into overtime. Patty Mills and Josh Giddey put on a show early, as the Aussies led 46-22 midway in the second quarter. However, costly turnovers were the demise of the Boomers as they lost the lead to trail 67-65 at three-quarter time.
There was nine seconds left of the game when Patty Mills made an amazing shot to send the game into overtime. Unfortunately for the Aussies, they could not hold on with the final score of 90-95, to send Serbia into the semi-finals.
“We threw everything at them, it just wasn’t our day. They played a hell of a game,” Mills told Channel Nine.
“We’ve had a blast, this journey’s been fun.”
Australian cyclists break world record in men’s team pursuit.
The Aussies in men’s team pursuit cycling smashed the world record and sent themselves into a gold medal race. They raced against the previous world-record holders, Italy, beating them with a final time of 3:40.730 and breaking the Italians’ previous record by two seconds. They will now face Great Britain in the battle for gold on Thursday morning.
Other Aussies advancing to finals
Aussie beach volleyball duo, Mariafe del Solar and Taliqua Clancy, defeated Swiss pair Zoé Vergé-Dépré and Esmee Boebener, two sets to one. They will take on the winner of Brazil’s Ana Patricia Ramos and Duda Lisboa and Latvia’s Tina Graudina and Anastasija Samoilova on Thursday in the semi-finals.
Australian women’s water polo team also advanced to the semi finals after defeating Greece, 9-6. They will play the USA on Friday morning.
The Australian men’s K-4 canoe team earned their spot in the semi-finals and set an Olympic record, crossing the finish line at 1:19.39. They compete for finals on Thursday night.
