Olympics: Australia’s day 14 recap

Australia finished their most successful Olympic campaign adding three silvers and two more bronze to their tally.

Australia has finished its most successful Olympics, coming fourth in the medal tally as Jessica Hull won silver in the women’s 1500m and the Opals got the bronze medal in the women’s basketball competition.

Hull creates Australian history

Distance runner Jessica Hull has become the first women in Australia’s history to win an Olympic medal in the 1500m. Hull ran an impressive time of 3:52.56 to finish second and take home the silver medal.

Hull credited a training overhaul last year as the reason she was able to claim the silver medal on Sunday morning.

“I think, March I made a few changes after World Indoors when I came fourth and I was just like, ‘I don’t want to come fourth again’ and that meant like doing some really, really hard stuff,” she said.

Hull was also able to identify the weakness in her runs at previous championships and adjusted her training accordingly.

“I did training that helps with my close, because my close was my weakness.”

The event was won by Kenyan runner Faith Kipyegon, in her third Olympic gold at that distance.

Opals win bronze medal

The Opals beat Belgium in a thrilling Bronze medal match 85-81, winning their first medal at the Olympics in 12 years.

Ezi Magbegor was the player of the match scoring an incredible 30 points on 71 percent shooting from the field to go along with her 13 rebounds, three blocks and three steals.

The bronze medal secures Lauren Jackson fifth medal at the Olympics. While Jackson didn’t play in the game against Belgium, she told the media how special this Olympic campaign was to her.

“It was amazing. It’s so special. The girls were remarkable tonight, especially under pressure, down the stretch,” she said.

The gold medal match was played out between France and USA, with USA taking the gold.

Stingers silver medal

The Stingers have claimed the silver medal, losing to Spain 11-9 in the women’s water polo gold medal match.

It was a tight contest for the entirety of the match with neither side being able to gain dominance over the other. It took until late in the last quarter before Spain sealed the win scoring two quick goals with just minutes to go.

It was the Stingers first gold medal match since the Sydney 2000 Olympics, when Australia famously beat the USA.

Australia win two medals in the cycling keirin

Australia has won the silver and bronze medal at the men’s cycling keirin final.

Matthew Richardson won the silver medal in a strong performance, while Matthew Glaetzera won Bronze completed a great comeback after he was last on the final turn.

On the final turn there was a crash which took three riders out and allowed Glaetzera to finish the race in third position and take home the bronze medal.
