Person dies after falling into a jet engine at an Amsterdam airport

Dutch military police said that investigations over the circumstances of the death are ongoing.

A person has died after falling into the running jet engine of a plane at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport on Wednesday afternoon local time.

Dutch military police said that the person ended up in the engine of a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines plane which was about to take off on a flight to Denmark.

A Royal Netherlands Marechaussee spokesperson told Reuters news agency that the deceased had not yet been identified, and that investigations over the circumstances of the death are ongoing.

The airport said that all passengers and crew were safely removed from the plane after many onboard witnessed the incident.

“Our thoughts go out to the [deceased’s] relatives, and we care for the passengers and colleagues who saw this,” the airport said in a statement.

The flight was delayed for several hours but eventually took off shortly after 8.30pm local time.
