Australia has claimed its 12th world title in the early hours of Monday morning with an emphatic 61-45 victory over England in the Netball World Cup Final.
Despite the scores being level at quarter time, the Diamonds overpowered the Roses in the second half with an impressive shooting display to run away with a comfortable win, their second biggest in World Cup history.
Australia has long been the benchmark of world netball and has never failed to make the final in the tournament’s history.
It was a highly anticipated gold medal match after England upset the Aussies (for the first time ever) in the group stage with a thrilling one-goal win.
However, the Diamonds put on a shooting clinic in Cape Town thanks to Sophie Garbin and Kiera Austin who capitalised at the attacking end of the court. Austin was named Player of The Match.
Diamonds coach, Stacey Marinkovich, sang the praises of her shooters, who were game-changing inclusions for the final.
“They’re young players and they’ve had big years in SSN [Suncorp Super Netball] and ups and downs at different points,” she said.
“But to come on in a World Cup final and have to shoot and run and connect when they haven’t been out there for a couple of days … it just shows the character they’ve got.”
Australian captain, Liz Watson, knew the side was capable and said it wasn’t a surprise to see the shooters connect so well.
“We see it in training all the time, but then to come out there and do it on the biggest stage in probably their whole career is pretty special.”
