The SBS News and Current Affairs team is offering three, 12 month paid cadetships to recent journalism graduates (or candidates who can demonstrate a strong interest in broadcast journalism) wanting to build their career in broadcast journalism. The cadetship will take place in Artarmon, Sydney and cadets will earn $45,761-$52,019.
The successful applicant must be close to completion or have completed a tertiary, trade or similar training in television journalism. Whilst applicants with a strong interest in broadcast journalism will also be considered, training and/or experience in radio and/or online journalism is advantageous.
To be successful in this position you must have:
- Good general knowledge of local and international news and current affairs, and be familiar with SBS’s News and Current Affairs offerings.
- Demonstrate a good sense of news and an ability to use your determination
- Initiative and curiosity
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- The ability to develop compelling, interesting and relevant story ideas and packages for our audiences must be displayed.
- The ability to communicate in a second language and experience of other cultures is also desirable.
The successful applicant will join SBS in early 2013 and will be working for our television, radio and online news desks, mostly based in our Sydney Newsroom, although you will also undertake placements in our Canberra and Melbourne bureaus, as well as with the current affairs programs.
As part of a team and under direction, you will contribute to SBS News and Current Affairs programs in a variety of ways, including researching, reporting and producing news and current affairs. The position involves rostered shift work and the successful candidate must be able to undertake shift work involving evening and weekend work.
The cadetship is offered for one year with no guarantee of ongoing employment. However, a cadet who successfully completes the program may then be considered for any vacancies within SBS News and Current Affairs.
