The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has asked Luis Rubiales to resign after kissing player Jenni Hermoso on the lips during the World Cup medal presentation over a week ago.
Hermoso has said that the kiss was not consensual as Rubiales had claimed following an outcry.
“I want to reiterate as I did before that I did not like this incident,” she said in a statement.
The RFEF’s regional presidents originally supported Rubiales in their meeting on Friday, but Monday’s emergency meeting has led to his suspension and potential removal.
“I won’t resign. I will fight until the end,” Rubiales said in Friday’s meeting.
Earlier on Monday, a Spanish court opened a preliminary investigation into Rubiales looking into whether the kiss could amount to a sexual assault case.
Rubiales’ mother, Angeles Bejar, has gone on a hunger strike in support of her son, telling Spanish Press it is an “inhumane and bloody witch-hunt”.
The RFEF have put their support in vice-president Pedro Rocha to lead them through a “new stage where dialogue and reconciliation with all football institutions will be the line followed.”
Spain were victorious in the Women’s World Cup, defeating England 1-0 in Sydney on August 20.
