Suspect in custody after another assassination attempt on Donald Trump

It is the second time in two months the former president has been targeted.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation announced the arrest of a 58-year-old man after shots were fired at Trump’s Florida golf course.

Investigators say a Secret Service agent opened fire on the gunman after they claimed to have seen a rifle barrel poking through a fence while the former president was playing. Trump was unharmed.

The suspect was allegedly sitting on the border of the golf course with a rifle and a go-pro camera around 2pm local time. He was reportedly 300-500 yards away from Trump who was between the fifth and sixth holes of the course.

The man was stopped fleeing in a black Nissan which was identified by a witness nearby who took a photo of the car and told authorities. Police closed a large amount of Interstate 95 before eventually stopping the suspect and detaining him.

Trump emailed his supporters saying “nothing will slow me down” despite the latest assassination attempt.

“I am safe and well, and no one was hurt. Thank god!” he said.

The former president was also targeted two months ago when he got shot on the ear by a bullet at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. That attempt ended in the death of a civilian as well as the shooter.

The Secret Service faced intense and immediate scrutiny over the failures that allowed a gunman to climb on nearby roof and fire at Trump. Since then, congressional inquiries opened up and the former head of the agency has stepped down.

There are still questions raised about the level of security Trump has as a former president and current candidate. Multiple police units remain outside the West Palm Beach golf course and they urge the public to avoid the area.
