Truck collision causes delay on West Gate

Melbourne motorists experiencing delays on West Gate.

Melbourne motorists heading towards the city are experiencing major delays after a two-truck crash on the West Gate Freeway this morning.

A semi-trailer truck jackknifed and slammed into a concrete barrier just before 7.30am, blocking every inbound lane near the Burnley Tunnel leading to the Monash Freeway during peak hour.

The semi-trailer was removed by a heavy haulage tow truck around 8.40am and every lane had been reopened by 9am.

One stuck motorist told 3AW earlier the situation was an “absolute disaster”.

“As soon as we started to move a guy in front of me broke down,” another motorist told the station.

“We all had to go around him.”

Vic Roads incident response team is assisting everyone who broke down during the closure and are encouraging anyone on the road to find an alternative route if they can.

Planning approval for the Victorian Government’s $6.7 billion West Gate Tunnel project has been reinstated, after the Coalition and the Greens voted against it yesterday.

Work is set to resume this afternoon.

Premier Daniel Andrews told media this morning that today’s incident on the West Gate proved why the project should go ahead.

“Anybody opposed to this project has the wrong priorities and just doesn’t understand what our city and state needs,” he said.
