US announce foreign aid package for allies

$95 billion in aid funding for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan will be voted on in the US congress.

US Speaker Mike Johnson has unveiled a USD $95 billion aid package to assist Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.

Johnson, alongside members of the Republican congressional leadership, provided the details for the package. It included USD $61 billion to support Ukraine in their defence against Russia and USD $26 billion in funding support for Israel.

Johnson said the bill’s success was vital in order to support their allies.

“We know the urgency in Ukraine and in Israel and we are going to stand by Israel, our close ally and dear friend, and we’re going to stand for freedom and make sure that Vladimir Putin doesn’t march through Europe,” he said.

The package involves four separate bills that each outline how much aid will be supplied to each country. The third bill, which will provide financial support for Ukraine, will involve a loan structure meaning USD $10 billion will need to be repaid by the war-torn nation.

The Indo-Pacific, including Taiwan, will also receive USD $8 billion in support to counter China’s aggression in the region.

President Joe Biden announced his support for the package on X (formerly Twitter), urging congress to pass the bill.

“I will sign this into law immediately to send a message to the world: We stand with our friends, and we won’t let Iran or Russia succeed,” he wrote.

Johnson said in a text message obtained by NBC he expects the final vote on the bill to be on Saturday.
