Vandals trash Warrandyte RSL war memorial

A Warrandyte war memorial has been trashed by vandals on the eve of Anzac Day.

Warrandyte RSL members have woken on the eve of Anzac Day to discover “War is murder” scrawled across the bottom of the plaque in red spray paint.

The members have slammed the graffitists as “disgusting idiots” who defaced the memorial with anarchy signs.

Warrandyte RSL President Henk van der Helm, learnt of the vandalism through Facebook this morning.

“Pretty disgusted to see our war memorial vandalised the day before Anzac Day,” he told the Herald Sun.

The graffiti is expected to be costly, as it is sprayed over the inscribed gold lettering on the memorial.

Mr van der Helm hopes to have the memorial fixed for ANZAC Day.

“We’re all pretty disgusted but we’re optimistic that we’ll get it looking right again for tomorrow,” he said.

The RSL’s Anzac Day service starts at 10:30am tomorrow.
