The Werribee Tigers have won the VFL premiership holding on in a thriller to beat the Southport Sharks in the East Coast state league.
The Tigers led by 26 points after 11 minutes played in the final quarter, but the Sharks stormed home to put themselves within a goal with seven minutes to play. The Sharks couldn’t add to their score in the remaining time and the Tigers held on to win by 6 points.
Werribee fell agonisingly close last year losing to the Suns in the Grand final. But they bounced back finishing first on the ladder and securing the flag.
Werribee captain Dom Drew was named the best on ground after having 23 disposals and two goals. He was in tears in his post game interview and was extremely proud of his team’s redemption.
“That’s the life’s work, isn’t it? These boys, we win the minor premiers but we shouldn’t be here. There’s a lot of boys under 22, and I’m so proud of them,” he said
